As far as I can remember I have always dreamed of riding on a train. I lived next to a train track for most of my childhood, and I remembered how excited I would get when I heard the whistle blowing from afar. That dream came true and let me tell you that it is an enjoyable experience to hop aboard a train.
There are so many advantages of riding a train especially for those that are usually stuck in the driver’s seat when traveling. It is also perfect for kids that get restless in the car and need to get up and move around. You can move freely about on the train while still enjoying the scenery. Riding the train allows you to see so much of the country side that you otherwise would miss by driving. It allows you to relax and not worry about keeping your eyes on the road, stopping for gas or sitting in traffic. The seating is spacious and very comfortable. You can bring snacks if you like or visit the snack bar on board.
The family and I packed our bags and hopped aboard the Amtrak-Heartland Flyer and headed to Fort Worth, Texas. We knew we would need a rental car for this trip and luckily the rental car company is conveniently located at the train station. This particular trip was to Glen Rose, Texas. Glen Rose Texas is the dinosaur capital of Texas. It is also home to Dinosaur World, Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch, Big Rock Park and more! Your family can explore some of the most preserved dinosaur tracks in the U.S. at the Dinosaur Valley State Park which is a short drive from Dinosaur World.
Is an outdoor museum dedicated to prehistoric animals where kids of all ages can play while allowing their imagination to wander. Walking among life-size dinosaurs in a natural setting gives you a sense of how these magnificent creatures roamed the earth many years ago. Kids can dig for fossils, excavate gems and hang out with animatronic dinosaurs. The park has walking trails, two playgrounds and a covered picnic area for you to relax after enjoying some fun dinosaur exploring. You can expect to spend about 2-3 hours here. Remember to bring quarters to purchase fish pellets for the hungry Koi fish.
If you are looking for more adventure after visiting Dinosaur World, I highly recommend you check out the Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch. It’s a short drive from Dinosaur World.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch
Is one of the top wildlife ranches in the U.S. and I see why. This place is fantastic! It has over a 1000 animals roaming freely in their natural habitat that you get to interact with. When was the last time a zebra stuck his head in the window of your car? Umm, at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch. Ha! This ranch is about 9 miles of spectacular wildlife, and you get to enjoy it from the comfort of your car. Well, that’s after you pay for admission and a bag of feed which I highly recommend. The more food you feed them, the more interaction you will get. Animals have the right away so you can expect to spend around 3 hours here. It will be worth every minute of your time!
Big Rock Park
The name says it all. It is a park with big rocks for children to climb, play and explore. It is also a place for swimming to cool off at the end of the day after exploring Dinosaur World and the Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch. If you get a chance stop by the Historic Courthouse Square that is a short drive from Big Rock Park. It was built in 1893 and is surrounded by restaurants, museums and specialty shops that will allow you to step back in time where life was much simpler.
Glen Rose, Texas is a short 45-minute drive south of the Amtrak-Heartland Flyer Station in Fort Worth. If you need suggestions on where to stay between Fort Worth and Glen Rose leave me a comment below or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, I would be delighted to offer a few suggestions.
